My friend Michael and I are walking home arguing

Marie Howe, "After the Movie"

In the Realm of the Senses, 1976

A true crime warning? In my Japanese arthouse movie?! It's more likely than you think!

Yes,

I think I should start this entry by saying that this movie is not for everyone. In fact, on first watching it, I thought it wasn't for me, either.

The version I watched had a runtime of 109 minutes, and I of course watched it in its original Japanese. In some places, such as Australia, the film was released with cuts and an English dub. I'm really curious what the dub sounds like, but I think drawing attention away from Eiko Matsuda's performance in any way would detract from the appeal of the film as a whole. Her performance is really the most compelling piece of the whole thing.
